the first 3 couplets are precious

i've been to london twice / i've had the pleasure of being a yankee at a pub in twickenham / this was long ago in the eighties / i have no idea what it's like now

Wow, the things you notice when you don't have your nose glued to your phone. Brava, Jill - you are welcome to give us more of these closely observed forays. ⭐

The next time someone asks me what I think of London, I think I'll send them this. It sums up a lot of what I think about it. The gyms and shiny surfaces point is so perfect. And I've been on enough late-night trains back north to know the type of characters you're referring to. This was lyrical!

Without friction, there's no grip. Slips will surely show.

I'm a little concerned about that Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese board in a few years time post-Charles III.

Always a delight to read, Jill.

This is incredible. The way you *see* people and then articulate what you've seen... It's really a gift

Yep, that’s the London I remember- much better on account of your closely observed telling of the day. I learned to let it wash over me, more’s the pity. I decided at one point that “Sorry!” Was London-speak for Hello. But maybe it’s different now. Superb writing, loved it!
