Best inbox surprise ever. I’ve missed your prose and dare I say it’s even better than I remembered! Plus, guess I’ll finally read demon copperhead

Ah 💕🥹 stop. Re: DC, you won’t regret it, I promise. It’s a mile a minute, totally unputdownable, cracking read. But also if you’d haven’t read Poisonwood Bible yet, please read that too because it is even better (different: deeper, even more lyrical).

Indeed. Thought you’d gone off somewhere and that was it! Glad you found the time to publish this. Are you still working on your book?

Underland is fabulous. Haven’t read DC. Working through “old people” books as my favourite authors keep dropping off the planet. Magic to read your prose again. Quite set me up.

Off for 1st nap of the day now - getting old. Take care. All the best, John.

I finished the book at the end of the summer. It’s in the hands of the gods (read: the agents) now …. as soon as I have newsworthy info, I will share, I promise. It’s historical fiction so a very different style to these essays… but perhaps I should share a few chapters with a few willing readers (the whole thing is 115,000 words so perhaps a bit much for a pre-nap morning…)

Thanks for reading, John. As ever. You’ve made my day with this lovely comment.

Nice to 'see' you! My favorite David Mitchell is the Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. Great historical fiction.

Thanks David! Nice to be ‘back’ (kind of… I actually think Substack has become a swamp of crap but it’s still my swamp of crap, for now…) Jacob de Z is my fave too. 🤝
